My CB-1

This will be an ongoing post on the build of my CB-1.
Saw this on craigslist and it looked like it needed rescuing. It was a poor neglected CB-1 that had a hard life (both sides damaged) and a R6 muffler bastardized onto it.
Once I got it home, it fell to pieces in the garage. The gas tank got stripped and is in repair now, the frame and swingarm got powdercoated, and I got that back today, the frame closeouts at the steering head are being machined and powdercoated to let cold air in, I'm kind of excited to see how that looks. The engine runs strong so I will only do the valve adjustment while that is out of the frame. New tires ( pilot activ) went on, a radial master cylinder, a clutch lever witout mirror mount, napoleon bar end mirrors, new swingarm bearings, new tapered roller steering head bearings, forks resealed and bushed, and progressive springs installed. The factory exhaust is being repaired since the stock muffler was cut off but they still had it.
The only part still in question is the tail piece. It is broken up kind of bad, missing the mounting flanges and had a couple poorly done repairs. This is not available from honda anymore so I may pull a mold off of it and see if I can make a fiberglass one. More pictures to follow as reassembly commences.

That fibre glass mold idea aint bad. might do it myself! wen you say the head is being machined to let cold air in are you talking about using it as a coolong mechanism for the bike? where exactly you machining the head?

The closeout panels between the valve cover and frame steering head are whats getting machined. They trap all the hot air from the engine heat and radiator right at the air intakes so it loses some performance there. I get to pick them up today, will get pics up tonight or tomorrow depending on what time I get home.

Got the frame back from powdercoating last wednesday and been reassembling it. If any one is interested in powdercoating their bike parts, do not do the top triple clamp. It is aluminum and the baking process releaves the stresses in it and the clamp area around the fork deforms and makes it a pain to get the fork tubes back in....it is possible though. Other than that the frame looks great. I put in the new swingarm and wheel bearings tonight and have it back on its wheels with the engine in it so I can roll it around to get it outside and clean the engine.
The gas tank has been stripped and dents pulled and repaired, after I primed it I found a couple more small defects in it that need a little filling to smooth out but I need to wait for the weather to warm back up again to continue with the tank work. Still deciding what to do with the tail piece. I decided to keep it a 2up so the ns250 tail is out of the question still pondering the fiberglass reproduction idea.
The exhaust is hanging on the bike but not permanantly attached so I can get the muffler welded back on in the correct position.
Thats where the bike stand currently. Hope to have some pics up tomorrow.

Just going using the stock swingarm since this -1 is just to turn for a little profit but figured I would ride it till it sells, the next one is going to be a dit more extreme.
Still deciding what color to paint the tanks/fender etc. The frame is back pretty close to stock color, thinking Chili pepper red for the rest of it.

If your thinking red Honda Red looks fantastic on them, along with a black frame i'd say it'd look the biz

I guess I hate taking and posting pics, I'd rather be riding or working on the bikes but here they are.
Bike got a bit dusty as we got some doors for the house to finish.
Here is the closeouts after milling, I don't think heat at the intakes will be an issue anymore.
and finally the garage with the other 2 reasons the cb-1 isn't done yet.

I always find it funny when I see a CB1 owner that also has a Hawk!
I do too...similar handling but different power delivery.
I think the cutout panels make sense; but it would be nice to have some screen in there
so you don't see the wires and such.
My bike has the airbox snorkels removed and some velocity stacks inserted in the holes; so
I too may do the cutout thing.

here she is, got about 400mi on her now. Working a stumble between idle and 3800 rpm, I think its the fact that a DPO marred the needles up by the slider in the carb.

Hope you enjoy her as much as I do mine. Looks great. For the stumble, I would try cleaning the pilot jets again even if you have already. Some of the holes are soooo small. It took me at least three tries before I stopped getting recurring problems like you have when I first got my -1. One or two cold exhaust pipes on start up and low rpm stumbles.
