Need one for my '89 that has no rust inside and no major dents.

Referrals for third party sources welcome as well.

I beieve there was a NOS one on Yahoo auctions Japan recently which may still be there, if memory serves it wasn't cheap and did have a minor dent gained in storage. You'd also have to use one of the agents to forward it to you which adds cost.

The New one in Japan was 27K yen last time I looked - about $300 US,(add a bit more for the agents inflated x-change rates), post would be $100 - $150, agents fee would be about $40, post in Japan about the same + bank transfer fees + US duty + tax. Probably about $700 - $800 to your door, that's if the agent or EMS don't refuse to ship as it's a fuel tank - you get the idea. There's a grey one on eBay UK going for about $30 I believe, if no luck over in the States, 'could be your best bet.

I thought I hit the lottery when wemoto.com had a new one listed on their website until they emailed me that it is no longer available, just like here in the States.  It would have cost less than $500 to have brand new tank shipped to my door.

I put out a half dozen requests at US salvage yards but haven't gotten any responses.

I'm biting the bullet and have sent it off to have the rust inside removed and resealed.  Then I need to have it repainted, something I had planned to do at some point anyway.  The rust removal and resealing will cost about $250.  Not sure yet what a respray will cost, hopefully less than $250.  Might be an opportunity to think about a different color scheme though the Pearl Presto Blue has always appealed to me.

If you want to save some coin on the paint, strip it and do the prep work yourself and stick with solid colors. I had a clear coat applied to a tank that I polished when I was in Calgary and it cost me about $120 CDN. A fancier paint job i.e...racing stripes etc would probably run closer to $500 with a clear coat. It is definitely worth the time to call around.

Dave, thanks for the suggesting but you sound more ambitious and likely more skilled than I.  I'm good with a wrench but I have neither the equipment, nor the time nor the experience to venture into spraying, at least not on something that I holds as much significance to me as the looks of my bike.

I think Dave was just suggesting that you do the prep work i.e. strip off the tap and cap, sand it down, degrease, mask off the holes, etc. then hand it over to your painter. You can save real money doing this as it's very time consuming in comparison to the actual painting.

Ah.  Yes, that makes sense.  The tank will be ready for paint straight from the shop that is resealing the tank so hopefully that will result in a lower cost for the paint job.

If you are getting it back ready for paint then you have no worries. If not...a couple of cans of paint stripper from your local autobody shop and some fine grit sandpaper to sand out any deeper scratches in the metal will save you some serious coin and make the finish look 100X's better than just spraying over old paint.

I have an '88 with a rusted tank, on the inside. Good fun for the carbs. I used a sealer a few years ago but that seems to have come to an end. Does anyone know a shop in Vancouver that can reseal a tank? I've been told to look into rad shops.
Thanks

i had the same issue and gave up on the tank. I bought one recently. I have my tank which is perfect, with a failed sealer inside for sale if you want it, I also have a tank for sale that is perfect inside, with one small dent (very small) and flaking clear coat for sale. It needs a paint job  but the inside is beautiful, if youre interested.

Sounds good. My bike now has to be towed to a shop tomorrow. How much are you looking for for the non-rusted tank?

100 bucks. I can send you a couple of pictures tomorrow if you want. You could throw it on and ride as is, except the clear coat is all flaking off and looks like shit. it isnt mine, so you could offer her less if you are so inclined, but that is what she wants for it.
