it's bolted on to the airbox and a hose runs from the carb to it. not entirely sure on its use though

Get rid of the 'perished' part before it get's into your carbs.
Part numer is 17253-KT8-000 and it's a whopping $2.50 US, still avalable as well.
It fits the CBR1000F '90-'91, GL1500, ST1100, VFR750 '91-'93 and the XLV600 ( Transalp )
You can find it under F17, Ref 011 in the parts catalog.

yes agreed. mine fell apart when I tried to pull it out. They had a new one in stock at my dealer. i was wondering what the point was as well. especially since the airbox is bigger than my lunch kit

this airfilter is for the air that's above the slides, some of which can end up in the intake, so it's worth replacing.

hairy
I just discovered today that there are two more air filters made out of that same crap material inside the airbox, that surround the two inlets from the snorkels. Mine fell apart in my hand, i punted them before i fired it uo, so now i dont have any in there, but I will replace before riding. Just thought of you and your sub filter. I also thought why in the @$!@$ would some dingle nuts put air filters below the air filter? why not use steel mesh instead of what looks like cheap homemade silencers? anyway, thought i would let you know
