stoopid carb question
«
on:
July 04, 2010, 12:47:50 AM »
I have my carbs off finally! if I take off the bowl, can I simplyt remove and replace the jets there with the same ones without screwing up the carbs synch etc?? Are the jest easy to screw out/in?
Also, is there any benefit to removing the vacuum chamber covers and the diaphragms for cleaning, and does that screw the carbs up?
They were all sync'd and in great shape prior to sitting, so I want to throw new gaskets and jets in if I can and chuck them back on the bike.
thanks guys

Don't remove the vac chamber covers. You may well not be able to reinstall the diaphragms due to swelling. If you do install new jets, theory says that you shouldn't have to resynch the carbs since that only involves the position of the throttle plate and equalizing the amount of air flowing through each carb but practically I suspect that having had the carbs off and disassembled it is likely that resynching them would certainly not hurt. Try it and see how well it runs. If it idles smooth and has no little quirks, then leave it.
They do screw out and in simply. Just make sure you use a screwdriver that fits nicely so you don't damage them. The bowl screws may be the hardest to remove. If needed see below.

the bowls came off no problem, except for one screw.... I did take one cover off of one of the vacuum chambers. it went back on pretty easily, hopefully that didnt bugger anything up! What about the bowl drain? it is pretty badly varnished, can i remove and clean and replace that or is it set to a certain amount of turns? thanks for your reply, its much appreciated, i am learning as i go.

Just count the turns as you remove it

out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the screw in the bottom of the bowl?

One little thing - if you're removing the needle jets, just be careful not to hit up against the tip of the needle when screwing them back in. Tollerances are pretty fine on the angles of the needle tip. You can hold the slide up with your thumb to keep it safe, then gently slide back down when the needle jet's in place, preferably while holding the carb itself upright.

i dont think i will play with the needle jets... i did spray tehm all down with carb cleaner, before i read that you shouldnt do that to CV carbs as it can bugger up the rubber diaphragm. oops.
I just got a set of cb-1 carbs that were taken off of a running bike, for 50 bucks. They look great in the pictures. So i may be in luck if i buggered mine.

I wondered who was the lucky bugger who scored those carbs.
I nearly bid against you but decided that it was probably more important to be able to buy groceries this week.
Did you find out yet if they are close enough to you to avoid the
$
18 shipping charge?
You should buy a lottery ticket this week, your luck is at a historic high right now with that buy.

could you explain the procedure for the needle jets a little further. I removed the diaphragm, by accident pretty mch, and had a look underneath, looks nice and clean, the diaphragm looks ok, can i just slip it back in without removed the needle jet holder or have i opened up a can of worms?
so i have two sets of carbs, and I took them both apart, the new set I just got looks to be in a lot better shape than mine, the diaphragms on mine are swollen(due to over anxious carb clean spraying no doubt) and I can swap those out. How do i get the bowl floats out? I know that there is a clip, but it isnt obvious enough to my eyes. I am having a hard time figuring out what set to use, the new ones are super clean inside, and the diaphragms are immaculate, so I guess those ones, but i would still like to clean and tear out the jets of my old ones from a learning stand point. There are two jets easily removed from the bowl, but I am still not clear on the needle jet and how to get that out. Does it twist and turn out from the diaphragm? if yes, is there anything else to remove and clean or are those the only items?
thanks in advance, i know my lack of knowledge must be annoying
cheers
thanks

To remove the needle take the top off the carb, pull the spring out, lift the diaphragm out and turn it over. The keeper and the needle should drop into your hand.
If the diaphragms are swollen like you say you should replace them.

are you sure they dont need to be turned out of the diaphragm somehow? I did swap the swollen ones out with the spares that are perfect. the needles are spring loaded in there, and there also appears to be a screw in the diaphragm deep down, not a screw really but a star shaped dilio that looks like a screw head and is plastic? i should maybe post a picture

I've never had reason to remove the needles from the jet needle holder so I can only relate what is in my manual and it shows:
If you have difficulty reading the scanned page I will email it if you pm your email addy.

thats great thanks clark. #5, on both sets of my carbs(so I am assuming its standard) has a star patterned(phillips) screw head on it. and they dont seem to 'pop' out. I have to swap out the diaphragms and I dont know that I understand the alignment thing with the needle jet, anyone? bueller? bueller?
again, I know I dont know anything at all about this, and appreciate your help...
