Front sprockets are great aren't they? yes? the right answer is No, they're assho*%'s this is the state of my old front sprocket after 10 hours of trying to remove it . the bike currently has 42,000 km's on her and is 21 years old. i'm suspecting it was the original front sprocket. i tore the threads off two sepperate extractors and burned out a quite expensive dremmel trying to take it off! anyone else had this kinda problem? 10 hours of frustration! all the same if it was the original sprocket it just proves the japs knew how to make things back in '89!

I think the original had a rubber damping face on the outside. It's pretty well worn, but I don't think it has 42,000 km on it. Not sure though, with a well maintained chain it might do.

PS, after all that grinding, you might have done a mischief to the oil seal on that shaft by over heating it.

Not only that but also taking the blow torch to it aswell, i'm keeping a very close eye on it to make sure there be no oil leaks for the next 100 or so miles! hope its not gonna happen but i have a spare just in case, don't wanna have to tear down the engine if i don't have to!

Have you tried a cooling Spray - I use this very often.... It's a special Oil-Spray that cools down the Metal to nearly 5°C (no idea whats that in °F) in seconds. I use a hairdryer (my wife is allways happy about that) to heat the rusty parts up and then use the Cooling Spray to cool it down - on ore two hits with a hammer while cooling down helps too.
