Hello CB-1 Land,

newbie here! Just picked up a 1989 cb-1 yesterday. awesome little screamer she is...!! rode her 70 miles home with a wicked stutter in the upper RPM range..my top speed must have been 60mph for the first 20 miles but slowly the jets blew cleaner and i finally reached 80... WFOT too!

which leads to my issue.. i figure it was a carb problem so i dug in!

one of the previous owners decided to shove the little float filters deep into the hole where the float valve seats plug in as opposed gently clipping them onto the ends of the float seat themselves...i broke 3 of them while prying em out... NOOOOO!!!!

do any of u fine gentlemen/women know the part number for these little buggers ( or maybe a 3rd party that has them cheaper?) ? i could not find them on the fiche..

here is a photo of them

i would really appreciate the help and look forward to being part of the community.

thank u!

Hmm, they're new to me!!
My bike doesn't have these, i just have the inline filter next to the pump.

You could do away with them if its a struggle to find replacements.

okay after reading around the board a bit i realize that the previous owner(s) removed the snorkels from the airbox...could this be contributing to the bogging/hesitation/stuttering after ~9K on the tach?

jetting is all stock in the carbs...could this be an issue?

fingers crossed that it's those jammed float filters and varnished jets.

Yep, i think i read on here that removing the snorkels messes it up, (if it's standard)
Do you have any spare? If not, maybe you can make something to fit, just to test it.

I would say get the carbs clean and tidy, then put it back together and see if it runs better / correctly. They run poorly if you remove the side triangle panels, but I can't remember about the snorkels. I never tried it, I never saw a need. Do remove the sub air-filters (baffles) from inside where the snorkels attach, though.

Looks like this:

I had to remove the snorkels to make room for the ballasts for my HID conversion and I did notice some "bogging" on the hwy while doing between 120 - 130 kph. The majority of my riding is done in the city where it doesn't seem to be noticeable, so I have not bothered to investigate further.

woot! got the carbs buttoned back up tonight...

now where is the fuel pump supposed to be? I just realized the PO had the carbs hooked straight to the fuel tank valve....maybe this is why i'm having stuttering at speed?

EDIT: sweet, i had a spare pump from my hawk ... it plugs right up! thanks honda!!!!!!

Bonus! You found the lug for it, then?

The CB-1 should work without a fuel pump... well, as long as the fuel level is high enough for gravity to siphon it out, which isn't for long after you fill up.

hernz,
I see my staff is taking good care of you!  Grin LOL  Just kidding guys.  Removing the snorkels increases the air intake, which would cause an issue somewhere in the powerband, if the stock jetting isnt changed.  A jet change would be needed to take advantage of the increased air intake.  I dont recall ever seeing those little buggers.  Where are you located?  If you or your bike was originally in California, could those be there to help with emissions issues that California has?
