My mechanic told me I need a new idler gear, as mine is all completely disintegrated.  Does anybody know about this part?

He explained to me that it keeps the chain/sprocket tensioned correctly up front.  I have no idea about this part, so I don't want to get "taken for a ride."

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Or he'll have you running out for a bucket of steam!
If you're worried about it have a mechanic you know and trust have a look at it, if you're new to the mechanic game get a reference off someone you know who knows a good honest decent mechanic. it's always good to get a second oppinion if you feel like you're about to be takin for a ride!

option 1) - BS. The CB-1 has no camchain, and there is no idler gear on the drive chain.
option 2) - one of you said/heard the wrong word, and he means the rubber on the front of the swingarm. That's the only part I can think of which might help to correctly tension the chain, and might "disintegrate", as it is made of rubber. It's part 10, and apparently now discontinued so unavailable from Honda. Thing is, it is really very rare for these to wear out, your bike would have to have much more than 50k miles on it.

Here is a picture of the front sprocket area on a buell.

Apparently Buell thought it would be funny to fit a plastic sprocket here - surprise surprise, these tend to break. "Disintegrate", if you will. Perhaps he's feeding you BS and hoping you think your bike has one of those as standard fit? To be honest, I would go there with a (big) mate who knows something about mechanics, and call him on it, I suspect you're being played.

Another possibility is the rubber damper that is molded/vulcanized to both sides of the front sprocket. It only serves to reduce chain noise, no more no less.
If it's disintegrated it may cause more noise from the drivechain but that'a about i..
Unless he's talking about the sprocket teeth being worn out.
