I'm new to this forum and have recently got a CB-1, it's in pretty neat condition but my dad was surprised when he saw that the front and side panels were aluminium, he was surprised because they tend to cost more then others, my question is that does anyone know how much the average for the panels is and as we have the facilities to do so, if i were to make Fibreglass equivalents including the rear cover, do people think they would sell or be of any use compared to the aluminium panels.

Any information or comment is Appreciated.

I wasn't sure which forum section to post this in, so i just went ahead with general.

Hello and welcome!   Smiley  Firstly, where are you located?  Secondly, I think if you posted up a finished set so we can actually see how those panels would look, that would determine the amount of interests in such parts. Its easier for guys to part with their money when they can see just what they would get for their money.

If you have a look on e-bay you will find that when bikes crash these panells are usually ok and go on to sell cheap, what does get damaged are the rear cowls and front mud guard, these are somewhat difficult to come by cheap, i don't need one but just giving you a heads up

Exactly that, the aluminium panels just don't get damaged. The front ones sometimes get taken off because people think it will let more air in, but in reality it screws up the carbonation and looks ugly.

You are right that the alloy panels are more expensive to make. The CB-1 is dripping with little extravagances, like the gear driven cams, stainless steel exhaust as standard, etc. - it was a premium model back in its day.

If you can make replica seat fairings at a reasonable cost, you would definitely sell them as they break in every crash and the construction in one piece is poor, as you have to flex the unit to remove it, and over time the plastic becomes brittle. It is virtually impossible to get seat units in good condition, and they are long-since discontinued at Honda.

Im located in south england in berkshire, when i do make a mould, i'll be sure to post pictures for people to judge whether they believe they are sales worthy Tongue, but in advance, i'm asking about what would be decent to produce as a decent mould can take anywhere from 1-3 months to make.

Thanks for the information about the parts.

another question i have is, what range do the original parts go for?

No one is buying nor selling the alloy panels, as they don't break.

No one is buying nor selling the seat panels, as they are all broken. If you could make them as a good pattern part it'd be worth ~£100, but your market is very limited. There never were many CB-1's in the UK and a lot of what was here has since been crashed or dies of old age, or is now at rat bike status. I would suggest it's not really worth your time, to be honest.

Panels go for between £5 GBP each to £25 each. It just so happens I've a set you can have for £30 Wink The problem with the side panels is that the finish doesn't last very long and not that easy to get re-done. They look quite good in black IMO.

Useless fact no.41 - US CB-1 models don't have the  "Gear Driven Cam" logo on their panels. Grin

You can have the stains on the alloy panels removed and have it sparkling shiny, sand it of with sand paper start with #1000, then for finishing use #1500 or #2000, while sanding it on the finish using #1500 or #2000 apply polishing cream, once the stuborn stains are removed buff it shine with wax or polishing cream, make sure while sanding them your strokes should be on one direction, for alternative you can have them copied using stainless metal sheet or fiberglass fabrication, the old panels will make a good mold for it.
