As you may have known or looked at any  of my post,s I am looking at replacing the whole air filter to a more compact unit feeing up space for when I cut the bottom out repair the,"ding(see end)"and increase the bottom to get more fuel in..

Been messing about with the original filter/plate and my findings are;

1, Cleaned out paper element and thought I,d lightly oil it with a very light oil....result  Bike would not start and smelled like flooding.

2, Removed the element completely,and used a very dense open cell foam, bike started idled well but would not rev above 9,000 Rpm.

3, Used very closed woven cotton 5 ply thick and layered 4 times, bike revs pulls like a loco but running rich.

4, I have got some Japanese matting,which one layer will go underneath the filter between the rubber trumpet,s and the metal mesh guard on the underside of filter plate and used above encased in the close woven stockinette.

To restrictive and bike may not start, slightly restricted and bike may run but lack punch, to free flowing and runs rich-which maybe overcome by dropping the needle a notch or 2.

The NC 32 engine and carb flow seems to like a certain amount of restriction in the air delivery to operate within its parameters, not uncommon with other engines of any type.

So will update findings on matting and see how it goes, but a bit peeved off, as its very windy here I had the tank on a wheelie bin while I was fiddling about,next thing bang crash wallop, the bin overturned and tank was thrown onto some paving slabs and up against metal rear gate, another ding and lots of scrapes, scrapes G3,d out fairly well but ding had broken flakes of paint off so quick cover with ins tape and blue marker pen and it least looks not to bad, but more planish work once bottom is cut out, Thinking, is it" Friday the 13 th, broke a mirror,seen just one magpie, hurt a black cat etc etc"

It sounds to me like you're making a whole lot of trouble for yourself. i get 200 kms out o a tank regular driving, if i'm anal about it i can get 210 220, that's a whole lot more than other 600 sport bike sor naked bikes get out of a tank. And i learned after the first time i dropped my helmet on the ground that if you don't want things to fall put them where they can't i.e the ground, if their already there they can't fall onto it

There's, "No Trouble" for me only downside is that I do not have access to the equipment that I had in the 70's 80's.

I have tuned every bike I have ever owned, and friend's ones as well, used to make my own pipes 2 and 4 stroke, used to repair,  modify, make tanks, for self and friends, repair, alter, frames to.

The main gripe I have with the CB-1 is its low capacity fuel tank, I am  much further north than I used to be, but by calculations I would have to fill up at least a minimum of 3 times if I was going to see family still in Scotland.

From where I used to live in the 70,s it would put another 140-50 miles on to the journey, even my late 70,s "Kettle" could make the journey on 2 tanks with plenty spare and that was not puttering about.

Even my old Honda 400-4 had over 3 gall capacity,and would also make the journey on 2 tanks with plenty of spare.

And what I'm doing I put to, "fettling"

No rear seat and rear fairing are going to be converted so I end up with a single seat which will be bolted and a flat area where the rear seat/top of rear fairing, this is so I can mount another dog carrier (modified) so my mutt can come along on journeys to.... Cheesy

91cb-1 As yet I have not got a carrier for a bike,the one used at mo is on rear seat of car, this will be replaced with a brand new one and the one I use at moment will be modified, (it is already slightly modified-cooling and exhaust fans) once I,ve buttoned it up will gladly post pics....

No my aunt's a new biker but has a dog and is pissed off cause anytime she wants to go away for a weekend on the bike she has to find somewhere for the dog to stay or take the car. #she'd seriously be interested in this

It was much funnier when I thought you were being sarcastic.  Tongue  I have a friend who carries his 45lb Australian Cattle dog on a sheepskin cover on the tank of his 1200 Bandit. Longest trip for him with the dog is London to Ottawa or about 650 km. The dog just sleeps. I have another friend who used to carry two size large Rottweilers in a trailer behind his Harley.

One of my favourite bumper stickers says:   I love cats, DEAD ones!  Roll Eyes

Thought I'd add my observations to the mix:

I removed the paper pleats from the OEM filter and substituted a carefully cut sheet of green UNI brand open cell foam. I saturated it with K&N airfilter spray as per directions. I don't know how restrictive it is compared to the OEM filter, but it is *WAY CHEAPER* and seems to work fine.  (apologies if this has been covered 10^6 times before, I haven't been hanging out here as much as I would have liked).

One thing I'm curious about though, the parts diagrams show that the air intake "snorkels" have some kind of internal screens but I'm pretty sure my bike doesn't have these. What do they do, exactly?

If you are referring to #7 in this drawing:

They are inside the airbox itself and are only meant to act as induction noise reducers. There is no harm in removing them and there may be some benefit beyond the increase in induction noise.

Update on filter work.
Should have posted this a few days back, I've gone for a medium close cell poly, oiled then squeezed out, the bike now will hit the limiter and screams through the gears,--------roll-on is no problem no hesitation, surge's, etc.

Only thing to do is dial the pilots in, as high tick over then drops to an even1,100.........been to windy and wet past few days, and it looks like its a no goer today as well, more heavy winds and looks like the pit of hades outside..
