Hi

New to this forum, I purchased my cb1 end of last month after my gsxr k5 got stolen.

I changed the oil & oil filter very recently and noticed some liquid around the engine which I cant say I noticed when I bought the bike. The liquid is not there in the morning or after work when I start it up but when I get back home or to work its there. Theres no oil leaking from the sump or filter either.

I can only think its oil but im hoping someone with more knowledge might know what it is and where it might be coming from.

Apologises for the poor pic quality but its from my phone

Cheers
James

Has the clutch cover been off, if oil there could be because of a poor gasket, or the gasket has failed at that point, you can get oil tight sticks, that seal off any porosity or gap discrepancy, rubs on and seals, another way, but not as durable as the aforementioned, is to vigorously rub a candle between cover top and c/case,  also check the right hand side of the engine breather to air filter hasn't got any cracks in it they do degrade overtime so worth a check to be safe and if not cleaned regular oil can accumulate into bottom of pipes..also check it is oil and not water/antifreeze as barrel jacket take off is not far and is actually shown in the pic posted.

What he said.

If it is not oil or coolant dripping down (you'd be surprised how hard that can be to spot) then it's a clutch casing gasket which has failed over time or been opened and reused. Or one of the threads for the clutch casing has been damaged meaning it is not possible to do the casing up tight enough. Both would cause a leak from that seam.

If you figure it to be the gasket and want to replace it go easy as a damaged thread is a pain in the backside and will get worse if you remove and replace the bolt. Unless you are relatively lucky and it's the one with an open back, as then you can use a longer bolt with a nut on the end. DAMHIKT.

Stick your finger in it, taste a tiny bit and tell us if it's coolant or oil.

Wipe the whole lot down and over the next few rides track how much of it there is and most importantly where it comes from. Could also be coolant from the seal at the bottom of the chrome pipes on the side of the block, they have been known to fail with age especially on lower mileage bikes or those which have spent time standing.

An old trick for a alloy stripped captive blind thread, is to get some solid(not cored or multi cored) solder and cut3 length's just longer than captive thread now the trick grease the threads of the bolt or setscrew and tighten till it just starts to bite---job done round solid solder should be available at a good plumbers outlet..

And welcome to the forum
