Trouble starting......

When bike is started goes great ticks over very even the tickover sounds a little weak/quiet if that makes sence.

What are the major causes please , low battery ? narrowed pilot jets (as said tick over fine,but maybe jets are flowing but narrowed with gunk)   

Plug gaps ?

It wont  harm to clean carbs, jets, check fuel enrichment is all ok (choke) etc;  also check fuel filter, pump.

One thing to muse over is the battery, now the cold weather is here a battery that was good in summer could be duff in autumn/winter cold...... the battery is made up from individual cells and while you may see 11.7-12.7 on a multimeter doesn't automatically mean the battery is good.. one cell could be duff, and cold weather shows up a duff cell  immediately, it,s voltage+amps that matter...take this............

Mine starts on the button, I have a brand new battery fitted............when I ride I always have dipped lights on, if I forget to turn them off, next time I come to start it it takes a bit longer. Then I realise lights are on as well as trying to start, turn them off and instant start..

When you press the starter button, does the engine turn over quickly?

Mystery solved, i bought the bike very recently, and it was hard to start before i got it, so the guy bought a new battery very quickly, i fitted it at his place before taking the bike, now i need to comfirm this with him, but from when he bought it, to when i got it was like 24 hours max, so i don't think the shop put enough charge on the new battery, he certainly didn't charge it, so i put it on my trickle charger for a day, now it starts on the 1st push PHEW !......

Just goes to show never take anything for granted

Also check that the, "New Battery" was filled with the correct electrolyte fluid and to the required levels.

If not, plates will sulphate very quickly and you end up with a fried battery.
