thinking of getting a CB1 but the one i have found has a relatively nasty sized hole in the LHS engine casing which is over the alternator i believe, does anyone have a spare of this part and how much inc postage to have it sent to bexleyheath, london

It is the pulse generator for the ignition.

Careful as really big hits here can do all sorts - bent ignition advance, crack the crankcase, grit in the engine, engine run after the oil got out.

Yours might be fine or it might be a lemon, caveat emptor!!

If no one on here can help, a cbr600f1 part will fit, often comeup cheap on eBay. You will need differen screws but I can't remember the sizes and they are only normal metric so no bother to get.  Probably the original CBR ones will do.

It takes a serious hit but yes I've seen a 600 SRAD go that way.

I'm sure the seasoned experts are aware on here already, but be careful swapping L/H covers from CBR to CB-1 for the following reason :- As a-morti said, the screws sizes are different between them CBR (twin pick-up are smaller) but far more importantly, the hollow locating dowels are also different by a millimeter. It's ok if you are swapping the whole assy over complete with correct pickup (removing the second pick-up and changing the wiring) but if you try to use a CB-1 pick-up in a CBR engine cover you could cause damage in several ways :- the hollow dowels (on the actual CB-1 pick-up) are 8 mm Outer Diameter but the equivalent holes to accept them in the CBR twin pick-up engine cover are 7 mm Inner Diameter so if you fit them and tighten down hard either you will distort both (as the dowel crushes and tears into the hole) or if you clamp it up so it sits on the surface it will be around 1.5mm proud and will risk the pick-up probe clashing with the rotor - I haven't looked in detail but I think it might clear tbh.  I just turned down a kind offer from Drew because i couldn't face modifying a perfectly good CB-1 pick-up. I was going to rob my spare engine for a pick-up but have now modified a half knackered pick-up (so no great loss) by grinding three quarters of the hollow dowel face off - there is a generous c/sk in the fixing holes on the new CBR engine cover I obtained (so 7mm holes) so there is still enough location even with less than half a millimeter dowel effect sitting in the c/sink (almost perfect to accomodate the millimeter in diameter difference!)
