Before removing the carbs, take the tank off and check out the fuel tap filter, and also the inline filter for crud. Be careful not to damage the tap, they're bloomin expensive to replace

The pilot jets are prone to getting gummed up though. No need to empty the carbs before removal, just don't smoke while you're doing it and keep them the right way up until you get them over a bowl. Any spilt fuel will soon evaporate.The carbs can put up a bit of a fight if they havn't been off for a bit, a lever from the side between the carbs and the frame is the way to go if so, just be careful with the lever on the carb.
