I'm currently looking at an '89 CB400F-CB1 with 9,000 miles on it.

Its in pretty mint condition.  Good tires, new battery.

He'll take $1300 for it.

Good deal?

If its in the condition you say it is, and only has 9k miles on it, I say get it before someone else does!  Have you rode it?  Have you heard it run?

Yes I rode it yesterday.  It runs pretty strong.  Sounds good.

I might have to bring him down lower because the tags are out of date.

I just paid over double that for mine. If you don't want it let me know and I'll buy it. Today. Now.

I'm doing mods on mine but I'd love to have one stock.

Too late cuz its sitting in my garage.   Tongue

I ended paying $1350 for it.  I'll have to pay another $150 or so for tags and transfer titles.

The only thing I notice is higher RPM's on the freeway.  Not exactly used to it but I guess its normal.  What do you guys RPM at on the freeway lets say going about 70 MPH?

Wow. Congratulations. You got a good deal on a great bike. Where are you from... Saskatchewan...? Is anyone from Saskatchewan?

Anyway, enjoy, and welcome to the party.

The stock gearing for the CB-1, I believe, is a 15 tooth front sprocket and a 41 tooth rear sprocket.  If the rear is larger than a 41, it will rev much higher.  A larger rear sprocket increases acceleration and decreases top end speed.  If smaller than a 41 in the rear, you will have slower acceleration but a higher top speed, which will give you less revs at highway speeds.

There isnt much power in the "1" down low. But ride it above 10,000 rpm and you will have to look to see if you are on the same bike!  10k to redline is where the power really comes on!  Just remember to always ride responsibly!  lol

I can't remember exactly what the rpm was at a given speed since I haven't ridden mine since Sept last year but I do know that my cruising rpm on stock gearing was in the 9,000rpm range and after changing the gearing from 15-41 to 15-37 it was down to the 8,000rpm range. They love to rev.

Congrats on the new bike.  Opportunities like this don't always come along.  I just paid almost $1k more  (plus shipping) than you did for a very clean, stock 89 with less than 7K miles on it -- and I felt that I got a great deal on it and would pay it again in a heartbeat.

Post some pictures when you get the chance.  If the bike is indeed 'mint' you might have at least $1-2K worth of upside built in.

In ten years, there will likely be only a small handful of CB-1's left in the world - most of them in the hands of real enthusiasts like those on this forum.  Enjoy the bike!
