The other day I was riding down the road, doing around 60, when all of a sudden the tach started jumping around, and the bike started to kinda hesitate and choke and almost seemed to lurch forwards and backwards. It scared the hell out of me, and after I pulled over for around twenty minutes to let everything cool off and rest (hoping I'd get lucky and it'd just been some weird fluke) I tried to go back home. And the same thing happened, the bike is now at a friend of mine's house since it was the closest I could think to take it.

I did ride it about a mile last night, and everything seemed stable, but I never went much above 40. Anyone have any ideas what this might be?

as strange as it sounds, this exact thing ruined an entire race season for me back in 2001. at the very final round, after a crash, sitting in the pits with a broken bike, i found the culprit..... a short (break) in the negative battery cable. start at the battery and chase all the wires as far as you can.... could be as simple as a loose terminal bolt.

Actually, I do think it's the battery terminal, it's never really held tight and recently it's been getting looser and looser. Thanks a ton.

And after a bit of handy work with electrical tape, she drove home like a dream.

I agree with you, Sparkybloke!

One special section for tips would be great...
