ive just had the offending articles removed and would love to be able to tell you all how much better/worse/indifferent the bike is but its decided to run on 3 cylinders just cos the sun came out (!) so im waiting for my replacement plug leads to arrive
 Angry
basically the dealer fits 4 washers 35mm dia  with 17.5 mm hole in em between the carbs and the head, fills out a form to satisfy the law and charges you £200!!! dealer probably pays F1 registration fee , I,ll post you the washers but I suspect its the paperwork that you would need if the worst happened with the boys in blue/ insurance after an accident
heres a pic
where exactly did the washers go?  Between carb and manifold or vetween manifold and cylinder.  I haven't looked at the fitting of the carbs yet so if this is as dumb question just shout at me.   The reason I ask is I am going to get 4 like that made up and save a £150 or so.

thanks

Hey sparkybloke. Thanks for the mail, but you will never guess what has happened.  When the mail got to me there was a hole in the corner of the envelope and the washers had fallen out duing transit!!  Sad

I don't think paperwork is to relevant, the only way to prove power output is on a dyno so as long as the washers are in there I reckon I'm covered.

I have pm'd you my address. Regrads

It's the paperwork that you pay the big bucks for and is more important than the restrictors. It's so that the police don't have to test your bike if they suspect it's making too much power. The law is completely flawed, if you have the certificate, why bother with the restrictors Huh From what I can make out, on the whole, the police can't be bothered with enforcing this law - it's just not practical. If you still want to go ahead, let us have the dimensions and I can get some made up - can't guarantee how quickly, it depends how busy my man is. If I had to have them myself and by any remote chance I was asked to produce the certificate, I'd just plead ignorance  Wink I'm sure they won't lock you up.

One more thing - IMO, FI International should hang their heads in shame for ripping off young riders - nearly 200 knicker for 4 washers and a piece of paper - scum Angry I'd like to hear them justify the cost. I'd also like to look into finding a cheaper way of doing this just to put them out of business.

To be honest i am very very tempted to not bother restricting the bike. I feel very comfortable with the bike the way it is and would miss the extra power.

I went to an engineering supplies shop (luckily nearby) with a print of the photo and the dimensions and within 1 minute was the proud owner of 4 washers at 34.8mm diameter and a hole diameter of 17.4mm, close enough I reckon and all 4 for a massive 50p;D Grin
The only thing the washers don't have is the small 3mm(?) diameter hole in the pics but I can soon do that if they are needed.

I hope to get them fitted this weekend then get the bike dyno'd to check output.  If its close enough to 33bhp the dyno print out can go in my son's pocket as "evidence" if ever needed.  If its out by too much then I will pay the dyno guy to get it right - he reckons throttle stops are much better than intake restriction washers.

Ok, fitted the 50p washers today. Smiley  Getting the carbs off was pretty straightforward once I had managed to get the wiring free from the airbox.

I put the washers into the manifold rubbers where there is a small ridge for them to sit on.  They could have done have done with being about 1/2mm greater in diameter for a snugger fit, they are also a tad thick but the carbs pushed back on and seemed to be on good and tight and making a seal.   So I put it all back together ran some fuel into the carbs and after a few seconds on the button it burst into life - hoorah. Tickover was a bit slow and that was about the only thing I could tell.

On the road it still pulls well and only seems to be affected at the very top end of the revs - which is exactly the affect you would expect.  We will take it to dyno centre soon and if its 33bhp or thereabouts will leave as is.  If not the washers will be out and I will let the dyno man fix it with his throttle stop idea.  I will post an update when done.

50p. I am happy Grin

I am not sure I will find out, or want to know Wink  Alistair is riding it now.  He said he got 85 easily on a short straight but when I had a quick go just after I fitted the washers it was still pulling strongly at 75 uphill and fat old me on it too.  It should do a bit over 100 with 33bhp.

My other son has a Honda 250 hornet.  That was dyno'd at 28bhp at the back wheel and he gets an indicated 110 but I reckon the speedo is a good +10%+

Thats rather good! Mine is a jap model so is restricted to 112mph in accordance to their laws.  A simple change of speedo to mph or a converter slipped in would see it go up to around 120mph.

I really like 250 hornets, I was looking for one before i came across the -1 but couldnt find one for love nor money.

By any chance did you buy your sons -1 from Bristol? Does it have lots of black powdercoated parts?

Yes that's the one.  Advertised on the XRV.org forum where I frequent under the name of Austin.  Its a super bike with a super restoration job and almost seems a shame to give it to a 17 year old who won't fully apreciate it.

By the way there is an Aprilia 125 for sale now - 2004 model, recent piston/rings, clutch and a few others new bits, good bargain for £1100.  Pics available soon.
