I think I have come up with a way to make my bike more track friendly and still have a side stand. I have designed a new removeable side stand. Basically all the parts are on the bike already, they just need to be modified. Once I get everything I need done on the frame, I'll post photos.

I just do not trust that hunk of metal hanging down for the side stand in a track environement. I fear that it may drag and catch at an extreme lean angle. So how about this, cut most of it off and leave approximately 1/2" or 5/8" hanging down, drilling two mounting holes in it and make a new side stand bracket from steel plate that will bolt right back on. That should leave plenty of clearance for the bottom of the frame at lean angles on the track. This way if you ever make your bike into a race bike and then want to put it back on the street, you are not left having to rebuild the side stand.

The CB-1 I bought used to be a race bike in Florida. Looking at the frame, I can plainly see where that hunk of metal hanging down has been contacting the pavement. There are a number off gouges running along the bottom.

Or, raise the rear end by a few inches (your call on how and how much but the CB-1 can take plenty without losing stability. Compare the gap seat<>wheel on mine and stock, and it was 100% stable at any speeds it could manage:



Then use a CBR900 fireblade sidestand, which fits right on and is about an inch or so longer.

It started life as a Hepco und Becker full 3-box rack that I bought s/h while living in Germany.

When the bike got refurbed/customsied, it got chopped and welded to make a back box carrier.

You can look a long time mate, you will probably have to use a universal kit from Givi, unles you get extremely lucky on ebay. Try ebay.de, search words "hepco becker cb 1"

not 100% sure if the givi will fit though they usually require sub frame mounts as far as i'm aware

bit of powder coating and the job was finally done. Point is - if you want a luggage rack for your CB-1, you're going to have to make and modify.

Looking at just making one with some 15mm diameter stainless steel tubing and a bar bender, got a bit of mech eng under my belt, point is i can work out what angles and where, it's gonna be simple as hell though one long bar from the right under seat sub frame to the left with one maybe two 10 mm diameter bars goin between just above the coil behind the seat?! might work if not no harm

Needn't be complicated, you only have to be able to fit a universal plate on. You can see the mount points my bit used. The front mount is a plate welded to the under handle, then the rack bolted to that. Taking it off meant removing the seat cowl, but you don't need to do that often.

Why not mild steel, then powder coat? You are unlikely to get the stainless tidy enough to leave unfinished anyway and mild is cheaper and a little stronger.

You would maybe be surprised at the strength you need. I had the side box bits break loose at a weld twice*

* I may have had a box full of power tools on one of these occasions.

Is the co.nr site pretty well floundering now? There has been seriously little activity over there of late.

I don't actually have a CB-1 anymore but still think they are lovely little bikes. I just know that in 20 years time when I am an old giffer, I will be looking for one of these to restore.

I wonder if - if/when that happens - I will be able to resist modding it?!
