Hi
I am installing a CB1 motor in a vehicle called PULSE/LITESTAR
as I am nearing the end of the installation............. I am having problems with the rectification
Am using a car battery and the rectifer just doesn't seem to be able to handle the load.
and reading it seems the orignal was not the best...........does anyone have a alternative or suggestion of a aftermarket one that would be better.
Also does anyone have a new old stock of the orginal?
Many thanks for any input or suggestions
Chuck

Hi Dynoman

Cool looking car.
The OEM reg/rect on the CB-1 is marginal at best and often fails due to poor cooling as it has no cooling fins. You definitely do not want a NOS unit. New units are available from many sources. These have cooling fins to extend the life.

http://www.rmstator.com/en/motorcycles/honda/cb_400_f/regulator_rectifier/regulator_rectifier_for__cb_400_f/240.htm

If you want to look in to a more robust unit adapted, this may help.
http://www.vlc.com.au/~justin/about/bikes/honda/reg_replace.html

All this being said, a word of warning. The CB-1 charging system can handle very little more than the original load. A second headlight the same as the original will overload the system as some of our other members have found the hard way. If you have two headlights, you might consider using HID units that give better light and use less current.

A search of the net for Honda regulator rectifier will soon show you what I am saying. Late 80's early 90's Honda VFR's, CBR's, CB's etc all use the same reg/rect and have the same issues. I don't know how much heavier a load the stator will take if you adapt a more robust reg/rect. Using a car battery should not make any difference to the system in theory as long as you don't try to draw more than the charging system will handle but in that case do you really need the extra weight of the heavier battery? If you do need the extra current for accessories then you may need to look in to a separate automotive type alternator maybe driven off the wheel drive. Many of the units off Japanese cars are tiny now.

Good luck with the car and when you have some time post up some pics for us to see.

Thank me when I've managed to find it Cheesy I'm near to useless with electrics but are you sure the CB-1 can charge a larger car battery?

Well, that was surprisingly easy, although I did go through all the cartons in the Garage before finding it back at the house Undecided

I got it a while back off a guy that had bought it as a replacement when he thought his was kaput, turned out to be something else more termninal. It's made by "Ducati Energia" as a direct replacement.

Would like $50 US for it if that's ok, plus $5 to cover post.

Money sent via PAYPAL
thanks
Chuck

to answer your question above. (the load to charge the battery ) just means the battery will never get topped up, if I use a car battery...so thinking I will drop back to a large Harley battery and see if that will correct my problem

Think of the battery as a pail of water with a valve to drain it and a small tube constantly feeding in the top. You can take out more than you put in for a while till the pail is empty but eventually you must stop taking more than you are supplying and allow the reserve to fill up again. The size of the battery will determine how long you can draw more than the charging system will deliver but at some point you must turn off most of the loads and charge the battery back up. The CB-1 charging system will completely charge even a huge truck battery, it will just take a long time. Even the largest battery will not allow you to constantly draw more than the charging system will make so you are probably going to have to give up on the thoughts of that 5,000 watt stereo with 12 inch subs.
