Get a flame to the outer cylinder till it's really hot and then jerk the stanchion out of the leg it should take the oil seal out, i'm supprised that you can't get it out though i've done two different sets of forks and got them both out not a problem, you have to make sure you've undone the bolt at the very bottom of the leg, where you insert the axle!

Right, turn the forks upside down and you'll see the 6mm allan bolts that hold the damper tube in place. You may need to push down on the fork to get enough pressure on the tube to keep it from spinning.( compress the fork) Once you get the bolts out, a few hard jerks on the slider should pull it free.

Can anyone please confirm actual amount of fork oil to be used per side. I read somewhere on this site that 510ml. per side is the quantity. Anyone know if this is correct? Local suppliers sell in bottles of 500ml.
Thanks.

I never set my oil levels up by quantity, it's much better to measure the oil level from the top lip of the fork stantion. Havn't got the measurements on me right now but they should be in the manual which is on the forum somewhere. Before replacing, I always make sure that every trace of the old oil is removed from the fork leg and internals too, if not, you'll just contaminate the new oil and the whole procedure will be a complete waste of time.

Hi Drewski - thanks.
I only bought the bike the other day and haven't taken delivery of it yet. The job will be done in the next week or so. I agree with the thorough cleanout and what you say about the measurements is interesting. I'll look for the manual. I was looking in the local shops for a Haynes manual - none. But they said they'd order it for me if I could identify the correct book number. I'll have to look that one up too. The rev counter is eratic once the bike warms up - other than that it's fine.
Thanks again for the posting.

Hi 91 CB-1
Thanks a million for that. The service manual is a big file even with broadband. But it's great to get it. I have saved it and printed some of it off.
Yes I'm in Mayo. Well spotted. I have to collect the bike and sort out the fork seals before I can go for any spin. I'll be back on to you.
Thanks again.

You probably know this already but make sure you use quality seals and slide them on the forks with some cling film underneath
