I agree with Drew. The Fireblade, CBR900RR here in the States (1993-1995), shock is a great upgrade over the stock CB-1 shock, and for very little money. I found mine for $40, then had a suspension shop set it up for me. First time out on the track with the new shock, I dropped 1 full second off my previous personal best! In time, I will buy a Penske, because I am that serious about my racing/track riding. If I only rode my 1 on the street, I would go with a 900RR shock set up for my weight. There is no way I would spend $800 for a shock, if I only rode on the street.
I was wondering what the shop would do to the shock? I picked up a 93 cbr 900 shock for 20 bucks of flea bay and am picking it up tomorrow. Do they work on the shock without the bike presumably? I also am wondering what the consensus is, do I re-use the CB1 spring? or keep the fireblade spring?
thanks in advance

I tried the CB1 spring on my '93 CBR900RR shock and for my ready to ride weight of 220 it was too soft, as was the CBR900RR spring unless I went to full preload. So I made a spring spacer that equals full preload and ended up being good to go.
Later I replaced that spring set up with an ST1300 spring which is 18kg/f, has no static sag but has about 20-25mm sag with me on the bike, ready to ride.

We'll, I have the full range of springs in the garage. Because there is no linkage, it seems that the normal 30mm of rider sag don't apply, per the shock makers, and my ruler! The starting point was a Fox with a 600 x 850 lb spring on it.
Notes I have from the manufacturers:
-Proper spring is 6.00" X 1200 lbs per Penske.
-Per WorksPerformance. 1000lb/17.8kg spring.
-New Penske or rework a CBR shock from LE. (Stock CBR900RR is 14.6-15 kg/mm (815-840)). Suggested was 1170lb/~20.5kg.
-From Fox. They deletied the database for old items. 140-180 lbs rider uses 850 lb spring. 180-230 lb rider uses 950 lb spring.
As you can see, the range is from 850, through 1000 and 1170, all the way up to 1200. I'm just under 160 lbs w/out gear and ~180 with gear.
Right now I am testing an 1150 lb spring and cannot get the numbers to dial in (too soft)and yet the ride seems harsh. Once I fix the valving, it will only get worse. I tried a 900 and it was quite flaccid.
I was hoping that someone on the list had some "not seat of the pants" numbers to go by.
Anyone? Bueller?

In the UK, Maxton are the best bet and offer good after sales service. New kid on the block are YSS - from Thailand, (don't let that put you off) - a good quality shock for the price. Penskes and Ohlins are way out of my price range, (like most CB-1ers in the UK). The Fireblade shock mod is a vast improvement on the standard CB-1 shock and one can be picked up and serviced relatively cheaply.
drew would happen to know or have a yss shock part number for the cb-1? i'm from the philippines and yss shock are easy to find here. i've seen yss shocks here being sold for the super four but have not stumbled upon one for the cb-1 yet

You only have to take the shock in to the shop. Let them know what your weight is and the type of riding you normally do. Im sure I will still need to fine tune my RR shock, but its sooo much better than the stock one I had on there!
