Trading Up
«

So i think I'm finally selling my CB1.(you can find it in the for sale forum if your interested) I'm seriously thinking of buying a SV650s. I do a lot a highway driving and am looking for something more power. Anyone driven one of these before? Or have any opinions on whether this is a good move or not. Thanks.

Compared to a CB-1, the SV will feel like a tractor. Several people in the club I ride with have SV's and the -1 is very very close to as quick in a straight line and much quicker in the twisties. Unless you really need to sell, I would keep the CB-1 till you are sure you have found the right bike to replace it.
Others may disagree strongly but I would never consider it a trade up. For the highway running I would look for an early (non-vtec) VFR. 750 or 98-01 800.

I have an SV50 and a CB-1 but the CB-1 comes out to play more, its more practical and I agree with what above has said. Its a trade down compare to a trade up! Its only slightly quicker and its easier to go round bends but that gets boring pretty quick!

vtwinhk,
You lost me with your comment. lol
I do agree with clarkdw, hold on to the CB-1 before you purchase another bike, if you can. Guys that have seen mine, who use to own CB-1s have all said that they wish they still had them. If you have a friend that has an sv, ask if you can take it for a spin. Good condition CB-1s are hard to come by these days, and you have one.

A friend of mine has an sv650 and has nothing but trouble with it from the start and just last week the crank case split on both sides without warning, now he has to throw an other grand or two at it to sell it and he still won't get his money back for it, stick with honda. hornet 600 is a fantastic trade up and much more powerfull than the sv for around the same money, easier to play with aswell

I've owned both bikes. Being a newer design, the SV650 offers more refined suspension, IMO (although no more adjustable than the CB-1). The SV650 is also more powerful, as you would expect (a very easy and fun bike to wheelie!)
However, there is something 'generic' about the SV. It just felt cheaper all around in comparison to the CB-1. From paint, to switchgear, to the plastic and fasteners used -- it just couldn't compare IMO to the Honda. The look of the SV is cool (especially the earlier tubular frame model -- not the hideously strange angles of the newer model) but parts of it look like they were just glombed together, with weird gaps between engine and frame, seat and tail section, etc.
The CB-1 just feels like a more put together motorcycle -- like a single piece of engineering that does what it is supposed to do. I love how the Honda is tied together by a single paint scheme on the frame, engine, wheels, and covers too.
Given that they are close in terms of real world performance, and overall size, I would agree that an SV really isn't a step up.
Now an Aprilia Shiver, Ducati Sportclassic, Ducati Streetfighter, etc. to me would be a step up bike!
Best of luck no matter what you decide.

To be honest if i was gonna trade up to a twin i'd have to say it'd be the ducati monster 600 it's not as well put together as the cb1 but i've heard its handy on the handlin. gorgeous sound from it too

I have only test ridden a Ducati Sportclassic, but it was definitely a step up in price and power. It has that updated "Cafe Racer" look which I really like, with a quite comfortable riding position. Personally though, if you are looking for a daily use bike, I think the Ducati is a bike for people who have way too much money. Of course that is probably because I can not afford one

Well i'm glad i posted this before I went out and bought an sv650. What I really want is a cb599 but i'm also looking into the vfr. I only thought of buying the sv650 because it was so closly compared to the cb599. I'm trying to find one but they are super hard to find.

I will check with the dealers in London and keep an ear out for any private 599's or VFR's. My only reason for a preference to the VFR is the bodywork will keep you more comfortable if you do a lot of highway riding. Either bike would definitely be a trade up from the CB-1.

I don't know what shipping would be like to Canada....this has been for sale for a couple of months...while this one is gloss black, I really like the matte black paint some of the years had.

Well this has really changed my opinion on the SV650. I basically am no longer even considering it. I never wanted to go to a different manufacturer, love Hondas. So maybe i'll make this my next question, I want to spend between $3500-$4000 and I am looking for a Honda. I 'm thinking of the VFR and CB599 are those really my only options? I'm 21 so insurance is crazy, but if I stick with sport touring it's bearable. I would perfer the CB599 over the VFR. Iwant a bike handles really well but has enough power to wheelie and take on the highway without having the bike screaming. So any suggestions and has anyone riden either of these bikes? Thanks
